This policy explains what personal information Ahoy Fares collects when you use our website and app, why we use it, who we share it with, and the rights you have under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018).
Ahoy Fares is a UK cruise deals comparison service, run by The Ahoy Fares Team. For the purposes of UK data protection law, Ahoy Fares is the “controller” of the personal information described in this policy.
Postal address: Ahoy Fares, 121 High Street, Rushden, Northamptonshire, NN10 0NZ, United Kingdom
Ahoy Fares is registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK data protection regulator. Our registration number will be added here once it appears on the ICO’s public register.
If you have any questions about this policy or your information, please email us.
You can browse and compare deals without giving us any personal information.
Deals you save are stored on your own device, not on our servers.
We only use affiliate tracking cookies, and only load our Kit newsletter sign-up form, if you agree. We don’t use any other analytics.
If you sign up to the newsletter, your email address is held by Kit, our email provider, in the United States.
We never sell your personal information.
3. What we collect and why
Saved deals and settings (on your device). When you tap the heart on a deal, or make a cookie choice, that information is stored in your browser’s local storage or your phone’s app storage. It stays on your device and is not sent to us. You can remove it by un-saving deals, or by clearing your browser data or deleting the app. Storing it is strictly necessary to provide features you ask for.
Affiliate links (only with your consent). When you click “View deal”, you leave Ahoy Fares and go to a cruise agent or cruise line (“the seller”). Once our affiliate programme is live, and only if you have accepted affiliate cookies, the link passes through Awin, an affiliate network. Awin sets a cookie and records the click (for example the date and time, the page you came from, your device and browser type, and your IP address) so that, if you go on to book, the seller can tell Awin about the booking and we can be paid a commission. We receive reports about clicks and commissions, but not your name, contact or payment details. If you don’t accept affiliate cookies, the link takes you directly to the seller without Awin tracking. Our lawful basis is your consent; you can withdraw it at any time in Cookie settings.
Newsletter. Our weekly newsletter, the Ahoy 20, is sent using Kit (Kit, Inc., formerly ConvertKit, a US-based email service provider). Kit acts as our processor: it stores and uses your details only to run the newsletter for us. When you sign up, Kit records your email address, the date and time you signed up, and the details it keeps as a record of your consent, such as your IP address and when you confirmed. We use double opt-in: Kit sends you an email and you are only added once you click the confirmation link in it. Every newsletter includes an unsubscribe link, and you can also unsubscribe by emailing us. Kit may record whether emails are opened or links clicked, which we may use to improve the newsletter. Our lawful basis is your consent, which you can withdraw at any time by unsubscribing.
The sign-up form on our site. The form is loaded from Kit only if you allow “Sign-up form and analytics” in Cookie settings. When it loads, Kit’s code saves a random device ID on your device and sends Kit the page address, the page you came from and that ID, so it can count form views. Your IP address and browser details also reach Kit and its provider Cloudflare, as with any website. If you don’t allow it, we link to Kit’s own sign-up page instead. See our
Cookie Policy for details.
When you contact us. If you email us, we use your email address and anything you tell us to reply and keep a record of the conversation. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in responding to enquiries.
Technical information. Like most websites, the service that hosts our site may automatically log technical information such as IP addresses, browser type and the pages requested, to keep the site secure and working. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in running a secure service. We do not use this information to identify you.
Analytics. Apart from Kit counting views of the sign-up form (above), we don’t use analytics tools. If we add them in future, we will update this policy and the Cookie Policy, and any non-essential analytics will stay off unless you agree.
4. Who we share information with
Awin (affiliate network), only if you accept affiliate cookies. Awin is responsible for its own use of tracking data: see
Awin’s privacy policy.
Sellers (cruise agents and cruise lines) you choose to visit. Once you are on their site, their own privacy and cookie policies apply.
Other service providers that help us run Ahoy Fares, such as our website host. They may only use information on our instructions.
Authorities, if the law requires us to share information.
We do not sell or rent your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising profiles.
5. International transfers
Some of our providers may process information outside the UK. Where they do, we will make sure the transfer is protected as UK law requires, for example by using countries the UK recognises as providing adequate protection, or approved contract terms such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or Addendum.
Kit (newsletter). Kit, Inc. stores our subscriber data in the United States. These transfers are protected by the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses together with the UK Information Commissioner’s International Data Transfer Addendum, which form part of Kit’s Data Processing Addendum. You can ask us for a copy of the relevant safeguards by emailing
hello@ahoyfares.co.uk.
6. How long we keep information
Saved deals and cookie choices: on your device until you clear them. We ask for your cookie choice again after 12 months.
Emails you send us: up to 2 years after our last contact, unless we need them longer for a legal reason.
Newsletter: while you are subscribed. If you unsubscribe, we keep a minimal record (your email address and when you unsubscribed) so we don’t email you again.
Affiliate reports: kept by us for as long as needed for accounting and tax records (usually 6 years). Awin keeps its own data under its policy.
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you
ask us to correct information that is wrong or incomplete
ask us to delete your information
ask us to restrict how we use it, or object to us using it
ask for your information in a portable format
withdraw your consent at any time (for example to affiliate cookies or the newsletter), without affecting anything we did before
To use any of these rights, email
hello@ahoyfares.co.uk. We will reply within one month. There is normally no charge.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first so we can try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK data protection regulator:
ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.
Ahoy Fares is intended for adults planning holidays. It is not aimed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.
Our site is served over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection and we keep the personal information we hold to a minimum. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.
10. Changes to this policy
We will update this policy when the service changes, for example when affiliate links go live. The date at the top shows when it was last updated. See also our
Cookie Policy.
